The TK3-2 Calibration Instrument simulates shaft vibration and position for calibrating Bently Nevada monitors. It verifies the operating condition of the monitor readouts as well as the condition of the proximity transducer system.A properly calibrated system means that the monitor readings and transducer inputs are accurate.

A spindle micrometer is used to check the transducer system and position monitor calibration. A probe mounting adapter provided with the TK3-2 holds the probe while the target is moved toward or away from the probe tip in calibrated increments. The output from the Proximitor Sensor is recorded using a voltmeter.

Vibration monitors are calibrated using the motor-driven wobble plate. A swing-arm holder is located over the wobble plate to hold the proximity probe in place. The holder and probe are adjusted to a position where the desired amount of mechanical vibration is found. The vibration is then measured using a dial micrometer which is supplied with the unit (no oscilloscope is needed).

A vibration monitor's reading can then be compared to the known mechanical vibration signal input. The mechanical vibration signal from the TK3-2 can range from 50 to 254 um(2 to 10 mils) peak-to-peak.

The Bently Nevada Corporation TK-3 Calibration Instrument (Figure 1-1) provides a reference mechanical motion for performing field functional tests of machinery protection systems. The two models of the instrument have identical functions, but different power sources. The TK3-2E is electrically powered; the TK3-2G is power by pressurized air. Because the TK3-2G has no electrical circuitry, it is safe to use in explosive or flammable environments. Each model is available in Metric or English measurement versions. a The instrument includes two basic test devices: wobulator (which is used in conjunction with an oscilloscope) and a spindle mocrometer. Both have a 4140 Series steel target which can removed and replaced with a material identical that in the observed shaft.

the TK3-2E and the TK3-2G are self contained and require only the appropriate power source connections for operation. To prevent circuit damage in the TK3-2E, make sure that the 115/230 Vac select switch is properly positioned before connecting the unit to a power source.

OBSERVED MATERIAL SUBSTITUTION
If be a material other than 4140 steel is to observed by the probe, then the wobulator plate must be changed and the spindle micrometer target must be altered to assure proper testing and calibration .
To alter the spindle micrometer target material, fabricate a substitute target disc from the same material to be observed (e.g., brass, copper, aluminum). The substitute target disc should be 1.20 inches (30.48 mm) in diameter and at least 1/8-inch (3.17 mm) thick. Glue the substitute target
disc to the face of the 4140 steel target.
To install a substitute wobble plate, perform the following procedure. The substitute wobble plate must be the same size as the standard wobble plate and be properly balanced. See your BNC sales representative to order a substitute wobble plate made from a special material.
